September 11 Lessons
Every student walking into my classroom now was born after 2007. September 11 isn't a memory for them. It sits in their textbooks the way Vietnam sat in mine, a fixed chapter rather than something anyone remembers living through.
The hard part is keeping it real without turning it into a lecture about where I was that morning, because that story means nothing to a sixteen-year-old and shouldn't be the point anyway. What they need is the actual record of how investigators pieced together what happened using physical evidence, and how the country's response reshaped their own lives before they were born, through new surveillance powers under the Patriot Act and security lines at every airport they've ever walked through.
These readings stay grounded and plain. No flag-waving, no melodrama, just what happened and why it still matters. My credit recovery students weren't there and won't pretend to have been, but they live with the aftermath every time they take off their shoes at airport security, and that's worth taking seriously.
