Focus
Ever wondered what happens to a portion of your paycheck after you start your first job? This guide will shed light on the world of taxes and paycheck deductions! Learn about the different deductions taken from your earnings, understand the importance of paying taxes, and gain the confidence to fill out a W-4 form accurately. Taxes might seem complicated, but this guide will break it down into easy-to-understand terms, helping you navigate your finances with responsibility.
Why is this Important?
Even if you only owe a small amount in taxes, filing a return ensures you receive any refunds you may be entitled to.
Decoding Your Paycheck Stub: Understanding Deductions
Every time you receive a paycheck, you'll notice a document attached called a pay stub. This document details your earnings and deductions. Here's a breakdown of some common deductions you might see: Federal Income Tax: A portion of your earnings goes towards the federal government's budget. These taxes fund public services like roads, schools, and national defense. Social Security and Medicare: These deductions contribute to social programs that provide benefits to retirees and people with disabilities. You'll benefit from these programs when you reach retirement age. State and Local Taxes: Depending on your location, your paycheck might also have deductions for state and local income taxes.

Why this matters
The W-4 is a form a new employee fills out for their employer, and it decides how much federal income tax comes out of every paycheck. A teen who understands it can fill it out on purpose instead of guessing, and knows that too little withheld can turn into a tax bill later. The reading's opening point is just as useful for a first job: even when you only owe a small amount, filing a return is how you receive any refund you're entitled to.
From one teacher to another
Michael cashes his first paycheck from a bookstore job and finds part of his earnings missing, and this reading answers his question. It walks through the deductions on a pay stub (federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and state and local taxes) and then explains how the W-4 changes how much gets withheld. Claiming dependents lowers withholding, asking for extra raises it, and too little withheld can mean owing money at the end of the year. The last section covers what taxes pay for and what happens to someone who doesn't file or pay, from penalties and interest to wage garnishment. For the math of net pay, Your First Paycheck has students calculate it by hand from a real pay stub.
