Why is Laundry Care Important for Teens?
Proper laundry care is important. Following care instructions helps prevent shrinkage, fading, and damage to your clothes, ultimately saving you money on replacing them.
Cracking the Laundry Code: Understanding Care Labels
Clothes tags are more than just a place for the brand name! They feature laundry care symbols that provide vital information on how to wash and dry your clothes properly. Let's break the code and unveil the meaning behind these symbols: Washing Temperature: A washbasin symbol with water lines or dots indicates the recommended water temperature. More lines or dots signify warmer water. Gentle Cycle: A washbasin symbol with one or two lines underneath signifies a delicate cycle for fragile garments. Do Not Bleach: A crossed-out triangle with a bleach symbol inside means avoid using bleach on the garment. Drying Instructions: A square symbol with a circle inside represents drying. Dots inside the circle indicate the drying temperature setting.

Why this matters
Clothes that shrink or fade in the wrong cycle have to be replaced, and the instructions that would have saved them were on the tag the whole time. Once the symbols make sense, reading a care label takes a few seconds, which matters for any student who already does their own laundry or will soon in a dorm or apartment. The sorting habits in the reading, like washing darks and lights separately and emptying pockets first, are small steps that make clothes last longer.
From one teacher to another
The reading starts by decoding the symbols on a clothing tag: lines or dots in a washbasin for water temperature, lines underneath for a gentle cycle, a crossed-out triangle for no bleach, and a square with a circle for drying. From there it covers sorting by color and fabric, what the temperature, cycle, and spin speed settings do, and what to try when a load goes wrong, like soaking a garment in cold water and white vinegar after colors bleed. Maya's favorite sweater came out of one wash too small to wear, and students have to work out what she most likely did and how reading the label first would have prevented it.
