Presidents 1789 through Theodore Roosevelt
Portrait clip art for studying Washington through Theodore Roosevelt and the early history of the U.S. presidency.
Washington through Theodore Roosevelt is a long stretch of history to hold in your head. I use these portraits of Washington, John Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Jackson, Van Buren, Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt to give that span a visible order.
This fits grades 3 through 5 units on early American government, the founding era, westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the nineteenth century. I'll use the color portraits in a timeline investigation: pairs put presidents in order, attach one event card to a term, and identify where the sequence crosses a major turning point. The blackline copies leave room for dates, notes, and research questions. A portrait can organize the study, but it can't tell the whole story of an administration.
