Inventions and How Things Work
Inventions, machines, tools, and design-process art for elementary STEM and history units.
I built this set around the questions children ask when they take something apart: What problem did it solve, and what makes it work? The pictures include a kid inventor, blueprint, toolbox, vintage airplane, hot-air balloon, classic car and engine, old and modern phones, computers, robot arm, bridges, skyscraper, rocket, train, crane, gears, and wrench. It works for grades 2 to 5 STEM, engineering design, transportation, and inventions units.
For a focused activity, I'd give each student one color image and ask for the need, parts, and likely energy source, then have the class arrange inventions on a timeline. The blackline versions are ideal for a redesign challenge: students circle a part, add a change, and explain how the change might help. I can also pair the bridge, gear, or crane with a quick model-building task. Both color and blackline files are available for displays, design journals, and low-ink student work.
