Explorers and Early America
Ships, maps, Indigenous encounters, and early America images for elementary history units.
This set helps me frame early American history around peoples, places, choices, and unequal power rather than a single heroic voyage. The art includes a spyglass, rolled map, tall sailing ship, ship wheel and anchor, rowboat, Mayflower, buckle hat, butter churn, campfire kettle, colonial map, quill, journal, covered wagon, and oxen. It suits grades 3 to 5 units on exploration, geography, colonization, and early contact, including conflict and dispossession and whose accounts were recorded.
I'd use the color pictures to build a map-and-source sequence: students place a ship, map, and wagon in context, then write one question they still have about the people already living there. The blackline versions make strong timeline cards and evidence labels for a class map. I'd avoid presenting exploration as empty-land discovery, and I'd pair these images with Native-authored or community-approved sources. That pairing matters more than making the display look complete.
